Eurostar to Brussels

On Tuesday morning I took the Eurostar from St Pancras (King's Cross) to Brussels. Metropolitan Brussels has 1.35 million people. (All of Belgium has about 10.5 million people.)

It was really speedy and only took around 2 hours.

After I arrived in Brussels, Bernard, Alex's childhood friend and neighbor, was very gracious and showed me around for a couple of days.Knocking on Alex's house. Anyone home?!
They have really cool gardens in the back yard, and everything is quite green (from all the rain . . .). Alex's house is on the right in this photo.
The Royal Square. Nowadays, one can see in the middle of the square the statue of Godfry of Bouillon, leader of the first crusade in 1096. This statue was placed here in 1843 when the new state of Belgium wanted to legitimize its historic roots and several statues with national personae were erected in the entire country.

We were able to find a little van selling Belgium waffles (gaufre).
Mmmmmm, I got cream on top of mine.
View of the old city center from Kunstberg Hill.
Another view of the city.
