I have a feeling we're in Kansas, Toto

After saying good-bye to Attma & family, we headed eastward into Kansas, land of the five-legged cows and severe thunderstorms (and continued high gas prices).

There is not much to see on the I-70 through Kansas other than the sweeping landscape . . . and the continual billboards for "Prairie Dog Town" in Oakley, Kansas. With high expectations set after seeing it advertised for hundreds of miles, we decided to stop. We were promised a five-legged and six-legged cow, Roscoe the miniature donkey, and the world's largest prairie dog, which we later found out does not mean it is a real live prairie dog - silly us. Of course, there are lots of real prairie dogs burrowing and running about everywhere, along with an assortment of other animals.

Later that evening, after we had turned south on the I-35 (I-135) at Salina, our pleasant drive was interrupted by an Emergency Radio Broadcast. Apparently, there was a severe thunderstorm warning with hale and tornado watch for southern Kansas. People around here seemed to race around and track the storms for a hobby as people kept calling in "This is storm tracker 325 in Sedgwick County reporting....." It turns out, we were headed right into it. But if we drove fast enough, we could outrun it, right?! NOT. Well, growing up in New Orleans, I had seen my fair share of thunderstorms, and this one was a humdinger. It was the most impressive display of lightening I have ever seen, and the wind and sideways blowing rain rival that of a category 1 hurricane. But we made it through and into Oklahoma!

We had a late dinner at the Denny's just south of Oklahoma City (city population of 537,734, 30th largest in US) and spend the night in Purcell.
